Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a significant, debilitating complication of chemotherapy administration for cancer.
As the population ages, more individuals will be living with chronic pain, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization.
The expression and modulation of voltage-gated sodium channels are known to contribute to various animal models of neuropathic pain.
Diagnosis and management of headache can be challenging in older patients. New-onset headache is rare in this population and is usually a symptom of another disorder.
Initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system, neuropathic pain is a manifestation of multiple, heterogeneous disorders.
More effective surgical, chemotherapeutic, and radiologic therapies for cancer have increased overall survival rates.
In addition to pain, patients with fibromyalgia often report sleep disturbances. Studies have shown that abnormal sleep patterns in fibromyalgia are characterized by delayed onset, decreased efficiency, and reduced slow wave and rapid eye movement sleep
Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common neurologic complications of HIV. In fact, nearly 50% of HIV patients are thought have signs of neuropathy, with increased risk in those with advanced disease.
Sodium channels are primary determinants of membrane excitability. Interestingly, recent evidence suggests that keratinocytes in the skin express voltage-gated sodium channels, with increased levels observed in such neuropathic pain conditions as complex regional pain syndrome type 1.
